Natural Welsh slate roofing and repairs in Tenterden. Tenterden's High Street and conservation area stock is predominantly clay plain tile, not slate, but natural slate appears on Victorian villas and farmhouses in the surrounding TN30 parishes. Welsh slate and reclaimed Kentish slate are both specified here. Free survey: 01233 877 146. Free quotes, no call-out fees: 01233 877 146.

Slate roofing in Tenterden is sympathetic heritage work on the Wealden town's slated period properties, in a conservation setting. Where slate features, matched natural slate — often reclaimed — is the rule, and consent may apply. A crude or mismatched slate repair stands out on a conservation-area roof and isn't the standard the setting requires.
The signs a Tenterden roof needs attention are familiar enough: slipped or missing slates, often after wind or nail failure; delaminating slates that are flaking or splitting along the grain; rusted or failed slate nails allowing slates to slide.
On Tenterden's Wealden slate roofs, watch for slipping or missing slates (nail sickness), delaminating slates flaking along the grain, and failed lead detailing. On conservation-area stock, insist on matched natural slate — a man-made substitute stands out and breaches the setting.
The judgement that matters in Tenterden slate work is hand-sorting matched slate to settle into the weathered Wealden streetscape — and whether the conservation area needs consent first.
When it is not needed: If only a few slates have slipped and the rest are sound, a matched repair is right - a sound slate roof can last a century and should not be replaced for a localised fault. More on repair versus replacement.
On Tenterden's slated period properties around the High Street and Oaks Road, slate work means hand-sorting matched natural slate so a repair blends into the weathered Wealden roofscape, re-slating slopes with nail sickness, and renewing the lead traditionally. Here slate sits among tile-hung and peg-tile roofs, so a repair has to settle into that mixed, weathered streetscape rather than read as new. Man-made substitutes aren't appropriate in the conservation setting.
A recent Oaks Road job captured Tenterden's care: a Wealden slate roof re-slated in reclaimed natural slate matched to the original, lead renewed traditionally, all within the conservation requirements. Sound, watertight and entirely in keeping with the market-town roofscape.
We work Tenterden every week, so slate work here is carried out by a roofer who knows High Street, Oaks Road, Golden Square and the local roofs first-hand — matched slate and the right fixings for the roofs on these streets, not a one-size approach.

Tenterden slate work needs a roofer who understands the Wealden roofscape, where slate sits among tile-hung and peg-tile roofs and the eye reads the whole weathered sweep together. A man-made slate or an unsorted mismatched batch stands out badly against that streetscape and breaches the conservation requirements. We source reclaimed or matched natural slate, hand-sort it to the weathered colour of the original, re-slate to the coursing, renew the lead traditionally, and handle any conservation-area consent. The result is a repair that settles quietly into the market town's Wealden roofscape rather than reading as new against its neighbours.
We inspect the slate roof and establish the conservation-area position — on Tenterden’s Wealden properties, where slate sits among tile-hung and peg-tile neighbours, matched natural slate and consent shape the job.
